JUNETEENTH 2016
We at the Southside Community Center would like to thank the city of Ithaca for it's continued support to our programs and special events such as our annual Juneteenth celebration. We are in the planning process and will have details about all the great events coming soon. Look out for what's next to come because it will definitely be worth the wait!
Want to get involved with Southside Community Center's Juneteenth Celebration?
Juneteenth Festival 2016
Date: June 18th, 2016
Time: 11-6pm
Where:
Southside Community Center
305 South Plain Street
Ithaca, NY 14850
History:
Many people might think that Juneteenth commemorates the moment that Abraham Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation to abolish slavery in the U.S. But actually, even though President Lincoln gave his landmark proclamation on January 1, 1863, it wasn't until June 19th, 1865 that the message was received in Galveston, Texas, and the last group of slaves were finally liberated. Thus, Juneteenth commemorates that profound moment when we as a nation could celebrate the emancipation of African Americans from slavery.
Activities:
This year's Juneteenth festival has something for everyone. As always, there will be food vendors and informational booths from local businesses and non-profit community organizations. We are also planning to have a slew of outdoor activities, including a bounce castle, face painting, and live entertainment. Meanwhile, indoors we will be holding some free workshops, including creative approaches to new product invention, intellectual property protection, starting a business with no money down and financial literacy. So whether you are looking for some family fun, or some professional development, come on down and we will show you a great time!
